PulpFiction - Redux

Now that PulpFiction has been released, 1.0 is a definite improvement over 1.0b5. However, it still is a little slow, but the stability is back. So as I predicted that PulpFiction 1.0 would be great, it is! The only caveat is that it is a tad slow, and tends to beachball when doing it's operations. The speed isn't that bad, but when used to Mail.app, there is quite a difference in the lag between handling items in both applications.

PulpFiction - RSS for the rest of us.

I've always been a little slow getting involved into large web standard kind projects or anything geeky like that. Just ask my friends on the web. It took me 2 years to get around and learn XHTML and CSS, but now I know them quite well and advocate for getting your pages to validate to the XHTML standard with W3's validator.

Recently, thanks to an entry on the superb NSLog blog, I suddenly understood the significance and how easy that RSS (Really Simple Syndication) would make make my life. I knew about RSS and knew how it worked, and had even tried NetNewsWire Lite from Ranchero Software who revolutionized a great product on Mac OS X that took news aggregators to the next level.

After the epiphany of just what PulpFiction does, I knew that I had to get it, as one of the reasons that I didn't like NetNewsWire was that it didn't save entries for later viewing or as a quick local history of what you read.

I have received a pre-release of PulpFiction from Freshly Squeezed Software, and like other reviews done on the pre-release version, the program is definitely full of some amazing potential. However as expressed on GeekPatrol, The Idea Basket, CarpeAqua, and decaffeinated; PulpFiction in it's pre-release state is slow and buggy but one heck of an application. If you check out GeekPatrol's review on it, it gives you a superb glimpse on just how superb this application is. This application probably saves me 15-20 minutes a day of having to check to see if there is any new news, and with Reuters releasing their wire services through RSS just in time for PulpFiction, life for a news junkie is grand.

One thing, I really am enjoying now that I'm scouring the web for more and more RSS feeds is that PulpFiction can handle both RSS and Atom feeds. You see, Blogger blogs all now use an Atom XML feed which NetNewsWire choked on for me. Either way, it's one of those programs once you use it, you fall in love with it, and the potential it gives you to bring the world to you. Another great additive is that it uses Mail as a template for it's UI which is very simple and clean in it's user inteface, while still being extremely versatile in what you can use it for.

I would highly recommend this application to any serious Mac user who realizes the potential of a syndicated news feed to save yourself time to get the latest news from various web sites. It will be released May 15th (tomorrow as of time of posting) and I expect it to be a sure fire winner.

Back to Blogger

Although I run my main blog with MovableType on another server, Blogger is just so cool. Especially the new overhaul. I'll be using this to post weird pundits or just papers or something on the web.
